Anointing of the Sick
Origins of the Sacrament
When Jesus walked the earth he healed many people of their physical and spiritual illnesses. He had compassion on those who were sick. He also taught others to be compassionate, even giving His twelve disciples the power to cast out demons and heal others of every kind of disease and illness.
Helping the sick is an obligation of every Christian. Christ commissioned His priests to anoint the sick and pray over them by way of the sacrament, which is a ministry reserved to the bishop and priest. In the Epistle of St. James we see the first description of the early Church's use of this sacrament:
"Is there anyone sick among you? he should ask for the presbyters the church. They in tum are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. This prayer of faith will save the one who is ill, and the Lord will restore him to health. If he has committed any sins, forgiveness will be his. " (James 5:14-15)
Who should receive it?
The sacrament of anointing is administered to those who are sick and infirm, reflecting Jesus' concern for our physical and spiritual well-being, and reminding us that He suffered much for our sake. The sacrament should also be administered to those who will receive surgery as a result of a dangerous illness. In this sacrament the healing hand of Christ, our divine physician and healer, is extended. This is echoed in the Gospel: "If I just touch his clothing, she thought, I shall get healed." (Mk. 5:28)
What does it do?
The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick takes away sins and the remnants of sin, strengthens the soul giving one confidence in Gods mercy, helps one resist the temptations of the devil, draws one towards an inner conversion, and can even restore one back to bodily health.
