Knights of Columbus
Who We Are
We are a Catholic men fraternal organization. The mission of the Knights of Columbus is in service to the Catholic Church and its community, but not limited to just that community. One of our primary functions is charity to the community and to our Catholic families.
The Knights of Columbus was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882. He named the organization after the Catholic man who discovered, explored, and colonized America in the hope that his Knightly ideals might be embodied in service to church, and humanity. Specifically, the precepts direct the Knights to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement, to promote closer ties of fraternity among themselves, and to set up an insurance system that will provide the for the widows and orphans of members.
The original group has become an international society of 1.7 million Catholic men in some 10,000 councils, all dedicating themselves to the ideals of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.
The St. Annes Porterville Council #2329 has approximately 150 members. Our local council began in 1921 and remains one of the original organizations in service to the parish.
What We Do
The many services provided by the council includes fund raising, social functions for the membership and their families, and ushering services at mass.
Our charitable activities include the St. Anne's food pantry and California drought relief for Porterville and surrounding areas. Read more about the food pantry here. We also support St. Anne's School and we provide funds for sports activities at St. Anne's School as well as other schools in the area. We also help with home and yard repair for elderly and handicapped people.
Our social and fund raising activities include the annual Parish Pride Car show, and the annual Knights of Columbus golf tournament the first weekend before Thanksgiving.
We also sponsor the Columbian Squires. Read more about Squires here. We also support the Porterville Chamber of Commerce. We also provide parking lot security at Holy Cross church during masses.
If you ask, we will try to give.
The council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Knights of Columbus Hall at 7:00PM. The first is a business meeting and the third is a potluck.
Knights of Columbus is open to practicing Catholic men in union with the Holy See at least 18 years of age. Applications may be obtained from any Knights of Columbus member or at the church office, here.
We are always looking for volunteers to help operate drought relief and the food pantry, especially on the first Wednesday of the month.
